According to a CW&C press release, due to improvement works to the pavements on Lower Bridge Street, traffic will be restricted to one way - down only :
Council to resurface footway along important shopping street in Chester 28 August 2013 Following on from last month’s national award for high quality street design, Cheshire West and Chester Council is to transform the footway in the important shopping street of Lower Bridge Street in Chester, with heritage York Stone. The eight week scheme between Pepper Street and St Olave and Castle Streets, begins on Monday 16 September 2013. And the finish of this paving matches the recent paving upgrades in Bridge Street and Watergate Street. For the duration of the works the road will be closed to northbound traffic and all vehicular traffic heading towards Chester will be diverted via Overleigh Roundabout, Grosvenor Street and Grosvenor Road. Vehicles heading southbound away from the City centre and towards Handbridge will not be affected. Councillor Lynn Riley, Executive Member for Localities said: “These works have been planned so as not to interfere with school holidays and will be finished before the run up to Christmas. “Using the same York Stone paving will visually link Lower Bridge Street with Bridge Street and the pedestrian area for shoppers and visitors to Chester. “We have listened to residents and business owners and know that improving the footway along this section is important to them, and they have wanted the work to be carried out for some time. “We apologise for making Lower Bridge Street one-way and the disruption this will cause and please bear with us while this work is being carried out"
“Following a number of comments made to me by local residents asking for improvements, I’m sure the new paving will be widely welcomed. “It’s an important route to the river, but I also hope this will encourage visitors to Chester to explore Lower Bridge Street and the businesses in this part of the city.” Link here to press release.
